Waterjet cutting is a sophisticated process that begins with the same water that comes out of the faucet. It will be softened and purified to ensure the smooth flow through the systems extremely tight tolerances. A pump, usually an “intensifier” pump, will harness hydraulic pressure to build the pressure in the system to the desired level; sometimes upward of 100,000psi. The pressure is held back by the cutting head apparatus, and a computer program containing the geometry will control the directional movement and flow of the water. The pressure, speed, and other critical parameters are determined by the material being cut. When the operator inputs the material & thickness, complex mathematical models will dictate how the machine will optimally operate to achieve the preferred cut quality.
